Ascot: King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes 2016

It’s Great Britain’s most prestigious open-age flat race this weekend at Ascot and we can’t wait for what we expect to be a cracking race. Hot favourite Dartmouth is expected to take this year’s crown (currently rated 9/4) after the withdrawal of Postponed due to a respiratory infection.

Some are saying the withdrawal means the race will lose some of its excitement, but as many have seen in the past, any race can throw a wildcard into the mix to cause maximum disruption.

Could this year be the year we see a mega outsider take it? In recent years the highest priced horse to win was Danedream (2012) with a price of 9/1. But with the 2015 purse at £1,150,000 and 2016 expected to bigger we are hoping for an upset to the apple cart.

The race itself is run over a distance of 1 mile and 4 furlongs and an entry horse must be at least 3 years old to compete. Commonly referred to as the “King George”, many past winners have won other notable titles in the horse racing world for example Hurricane Run was a world champion Irish-bred thoroughbred racehorse that took the 2005 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe & 2006 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
