4. Kelso

Kelso made his debut in 1959 at the Atlantic City Race Course and opened on a winner. 10 days later in his 2nd race he finished 2nd. As a three year old Kelso picked up a new trainer in Carl Hanford who was to remain with him the remainder of his career.

Kelso’s first race under Hanford and as a three year old was at Monmouth Park to which he went on to win. Hanford was quoted as saying ‘He was an extremely determined horse. If he saw a horse in front, he wanted to get to him. You could take him back or send him to the front. He was an extremely sound horse who was light on his feet with incredible balance.’ Kelso won 8 out of 9 starts that season. At age four Kelso also won 7 out of 9 races.

Kelso’s total career earnings was a whopping $1,977,896!
