5. Spectacular Bid

Spectacular Bid, what a name for a spectacle of a horse. Racing through the years of 1978-1980 went on to win 26 of 30 races. As a 2 year old he was the leading American horse in 1978. Early in 1979 his wins included the Preakness Stakes and Kentucky Derby. This momentum saw a winning streak of 12 successive victories.


Controversial as it was Spectacular Bid was pipped to winning the Triple Crown in a defeat in the Belmont Stakes. After recovering from victory he went on to win the Marlboro Cup


Spectacular Bid’s career earnings was a mega $2,781,607 which at the time was a record amount.
